Why should I participate in these prenatal classes? Preparing for birth has numerous benefits to expectant families. It works full circle as the more knowledge you have, and the more comfortable you are with that knowledge, the easier it is to digest and cope with what is happening during the birth process.
We would never advocate for anyone to go into birth and just "see what happens", or "let the hospital staff do their thing". Essentially that is like going to a restaurant and having the server just bring you whatever. Sometimes the food might be satisfactory, and sometimes something unexpected or unpleasant may arise, and you have no way to say, "hey, I did not order this". Even though your birth may not go as planned, education is essential in order to help you cope and digest whatever will happen.
To highlight the full circle of prenatal education benefits see below:
* A better understanding of the birth process which could lead to less need for pain medications * Greater self confidence and a potential reduction of fear and stress as you understand what is happening * Knowledge and understanding of common hospital and midwifery practices, along side with alternatives * Your labour support person/partner will be taught how to support you within their own comfort levels * Community support as you will be around other families to be * Knowledge of what to expect after your baby has been born could lead to an easier transition as a new family
When should we register? When ever you like, you're welcome to participate in these classes even before you are expecting but, sometime within the second or early third trimester is perfect. The information presented will allow you to think objectively about your birth options. You will need time to process this information, but, in turn, this will allow you to make informed decisions about your birth. I'm not sure we want type of birth I want; should we participate in these classes? No one is able to predict how you or your partner will deal with labour and birth, everyone is different and Mother Nature always has her own plan. Some families plan for an epidural and labour goes too quickly, while others plan for fully natural and end up choosing and epidural or alternative coping mechanisms. Either way it is my intention to provide you with information on what to expect, what the evidence says, and the tools to deal with labour and birth. What you decide to do with that information is a personal choice and no one will be judged for their own personal desires.
