The Family Wellness Centre offers four types of prenatal classes. A traditional 5 week series, a weekend intensive workshop, private in-home instruction, and coming soon in 2018, on-line classes.
We understand that the process of becoming a parent is often a roller coaster ride of emotions. Joy, fear, love, and apprehension about childbirth and parenting are normal - that's okay. The Family Wellness Centre has designed a childbirth course curriculum to empower, challenge, and inspire you to embrace the process of becoming a parent. Parenting starts long before the day of birth and these classes cultivate that journey.
We do so by sharing information pertaining to all types of births; after all, no matter what you plan, Mother Nature may have ideas of her own. We dispel many of the common fears surrounding birth by re-framing childbirth through informed choice and education. Our method of teaching is different than other platforms, because we don't tell you what is going to happen, but instead we inform you about all of your options. This way you are able to make empowered decisions that feel right for you.
So, if you are looking for in-depth, holistic knowledge, then these classes are for you.
Topics: * The anatomy of labour & birth * Differences between Maternity Care Providers (OBs, Midwives, Nurses, & Doulas) * Viewing of The Business of Being Born documentary view trailer here * Pain management and comfort techniques * Common interventions discussing the risks, benefits, and alternatives * Circumcision * Labour and birth positions * Planning for your birth (home and hospital) * Alternative health options - A visit from a local Chiropractor * Understanding the benefits of natural birth and the differences between medicated/natural * Postpartum, how to care for mama & baby * How to breastfeed * Partners and birth support are encouraged to attend every class.On-Line Classes

Why should I participate in these prenatal classes? Preparing for birth has numerous benefits to expectant families. It works full circle as the more knowledge you have, and the more comfortable you are with that knowledge, the easier it is to digest and cope with what is happening during the birth process. We would never advocate for anyone to go into birth and just "see what happens", or "let the hospital staff do their thing". Essentially that is like going to a restaurant and having the server just bring you whatever. Sometimes the food might be satisfactory, and sometimes something unexpected or unpleasant may arise, and you have no way to say, "hey, I did not order this". Even though your birth may not go as planned, education is essential in order to help you cope and digest whatever will happen.
To highlight the full circle of prenatal education benefits see below:
* A better understanding of the birth process which could lead to less need for pain medications * Greater self confidence and a potential reduction of fear and stress as you understand what is happening * Knowledge and understanding of common hospital and midwifery practices, along side with alternatives * Your labour support person/partner will be taught how to support you within their own comfort levels * Community support as you will be around other families to be * Knowledge of what to expect after your baby has been born could lead to an easier transition as a new family
When should we register? When ever you like, you're welcome to attend these classes even before you are expecting. Sometime within the second trimester is perfect, as the information presented will allow you to think objectively about your birth options. You will need time to process this information, but, in turn, this will allow you to make informed decisions about your birth.
I'm not sure we want to learn about natural birth; should we attend these classes? No one is able to predict how you or your partner will deal with labour and birth, everyone is different and Mother Nature always has her own plan. Some families plan for an epidural and labour goes too quickly, while others plan for fully natural and end up choosing and epidural or alternative coping mechanisms. Either way it is my intention to provide you with information on what to expect, what the evidence says, and the tools to deal with labour and birth. What you decide to do with that information is a personal choice and no one will be judged for their own personal desires.
What to bring? It is advisable to bring an open mind as this is an inclusive, interactive, informative and supportive learning environment.
What are these classes like? Both the personal and digital classes are fun and engaging. We will watch videos and tutorials, discuss a variety of topics, and learn from one another. The classes are informal, yet informative and full of critical information. We will be practicing positioning, and numerous activities which will help you learn and narrow in on your birth preferences.
Refund Policy Sometimes things happen we can understand that. If something shifts, please let us know ASAP, at least 5 days in advance. That way I can fill your seat for you as the classes are often wait listed.
